At least 10 and as many as 73 cases of Salmonella have shown up at Princeton University.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), over 40,000 people are sickened by Salmonella every year. Salmonella poisoning causes fever, abdominal pain, gas and bloody diarrhea and severe nausea. In severe cases, Salmonella can cause injuries as serious as kidney failure.
Princeton has closed many of its food stations at the Campus Center and has changed some of their food vendors. At least 80 people are suffering from stomach problems and health officials suspect Salmonella poisoning in at least 73.
Over the past two years, hundreds of people were sickened by Salmonella found in Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Banquet pot Pies sold by ConAgra foods. Honduran cantaloupes were also recalled after they were found to have caused more than 50 cases of Salmonella poisoning. Smaller outbreaks occur ever day across the United States.
