LBJ Freeway was shut down near Plano Road after a fiery crash Sunday morning. Three vehicles collided and burst into flames after an 18-wheeler locked its brakes trying to avoid two stopped cars on the shoulder. Two drivers were taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Later, a second accident occurred at the site and a woman was killed when she attempted to get close to the wreck to take a picture. April Sterling wanted to get closer to the accident scene so she ran into the HOV lane when a vehicle traveling west struck her, throwing her into the eastbound lanes of the freeway. She was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital where she died from her injuries.

These sort of “peripheral” accidents occur all too often. When an accident occurs, many people’s first reaction is to slow their vehicle so that they can get a view of what has happened. People forget to pay attention to the road and then before you know it, another accident has occurred.

Remember, safety is your first priority in a situation like this. If you feel like you need to help, pull over to the shoulder and dial 911. Don’t exit your vehicle on a busy freeway if you don’t have to.
