Many accidents occur right in pools and their surrounding areas, in some instances leaving homeowners responsible.

In a season where your pool will be used more frequently then any other time of the year, you want to make sure your pool area is safe.  You can prevent accidents by following some easy safety tips.

Here are some very important safety tips to help you ensure a safer area and avoid accidents from occurring.  You must supervise children at all times.  According to poolsafety.gov, you should install a four-sided barrier, like a fence.  The fence should have self-closing gates.  It is also highly suggested that you have alarms on the doors that lead to the pool area to be alerted if your child or a visitor, such as a child’s friend, is wandering towards the pool area.

Consider attending a training class to become CPR qualified, learn water rescue skills, and attend other such rescue related classes.  By your pool area, have rescue and first aid equipment.  You should have a phone near by in case you need to call 911.  Keep your pool clean and with the proper maintenance at all times while the pool is in use.

What’s most important is that you don’t loose sight of your child when in the pool.  Teach your kids how to swim.  The CPSC estimates that around 300 children who are younger than five years old drown in swimming pools and spas.  This is why it’s highly important that you ensure that those who swim in your pool know how to swim and you place in the above safety precautions (having a fence, alarms, and knowing CPR and rescue skills).

Having these basic safety precautions in place can make fun in the sun safer and avoid liability for accidents that may occur.
