So far, 15 West Dallas workers and residents show signs of asbestos-related illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and cancer. The cause is asbestos exposure from a local mineral processing plant.
These findings came from chest X-rays on former workers, family members and current and former local residents. Doctors have reviewed 252 of the 421 exams. fifteen of those displayed signs of an asbestos-related illness, and a few more showed spots on their lungs that will require further evaluation.
Only a small sampling of the thousands who might have been harmed were tested.
The initial concern came from a 2005 federal government order that determined the Texas Vermiculite plant, operated by W.R. Grace & Co., could have exposed employees and residents to asbestos from 1953 to 1992. Nearly 300 people have worked at the plant and about 80 have died since their employment.
The people who have not been tested can add their name to a waiting list.
If you or anyone you know lived or worked in the area of the Texas Vermiculite plant between 1953 and 1992, you should get tested for asbestos exposure that can lead to mesothelioma and other deadly cancers and diseases.
