Two people were killed after their car was slammed into by a tracter-trailer rig. The accident ended in flames and ended up shutting down Interstate 20 for around 12 hours.
After colliding with the car, the tractor-trailer plowed into three other 18-wheelers and exploded in flames at around 11:30, according to Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange.
Edward Corbet Koponen, 39, of Longview, and Edward Carroll Fielder, 49, of Maydelle were pronounced dead at the scene. Koponen was not wearing a safety belt when this happened.
The rig was being driven by Theodore Burton of Muskogee, OK and was traveling east bound when it struck Koponen’s car. Burton was transported later to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. Currently, his condition is unknown.
Traffic was rerouted through Tyler until I 20 was reopened at about noon on Tuesday.
