The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revealed that insulin pumps can cause injuries and even death. Insulin pumps are used by teenagers with Type 1 diabetes and the FDA has suggested that patients be extra careful when using these devices.

The insulin pump is popular among Type 1 patients because it allows them to dose themselves in public. It is estimated that 100,000 teens are using insulin pumps globally.

Some of the problems found by the FDA were related to malfunctioning of the insulin devices, while others were linked to error on the part of the patients. Either way, a blocked insulin tube can cause a dangerous spike in blood sugar levels.

Some of the teens did not know how to correctly use the insulin pumps and at least two possible suicide attempts were made by teens who overdosed themselves with insulin.

It is important that patients learn how to properly use their medical devices to cut back on the risk involved. While the number of people injured in this particular case is low, it does not eliminate the need for caution. Medical device injuries can happen at any time.
