Rollover accidents are a serious risk to SUV drivers. Since they came into production, little has been done by the manufacturers and designers to address the risks of rollover accidents. Therefore, many rollover accidents end up in the court as personal injury claims.
It sometimes seems that the car companies only change what the government demands. They seem to have made little effort to produce Sport Utility Vehicles that are safe and prevent rollover accidents. Creating SUVs that are lower to the ground that have a wider wheel base would be an overwhelmingly simple (but not cheap) fix to the problem.
Personal injury claims that come from rollover accidents are simply a function of design flaws that the SUV companies already realize are present but do not believe are important enough to address. The statistics of rollover accidents and the dangers that SUV rollover presents obviously negate that.
Holding the manufacturers of these vehicles responsible for their part in these accidents is the only way to demand change from the SUV industry. Personal injury claims will keep the SUV companies accountable, and with the threat of financial disaster, they might realize that the cost of redesigning SUVs on the market is worth the savings they would get over personal injury claims from rollover accidents. Ideally, they would realize that the loss of human life is already too high a price to pay.
